Devine keeps readers on their toes as Victoria and the zany cast of elderly boarders set out to solve another crime. The story strikes a serious note, adding depth to the plot, when clues begin to point to a terrible time in history.

In Cedar Chapel, where Victoria Storm runs a seniors’ boardinghouse, things are quiet. That is, until she enters the local pet store and finds Clyde Foster, the owner, dead, and his parrot frantically screeching. Unable to resist a mystery, Victoria, her fiance Benjamin, and her senior cohorts begin their own investigation, sending them on a dangerous adventure. (BARBOUR, Apr., 256 pp., $10.99)
