The Jamesville series is tied together by location and familial ties, but book three can be equally enjoyed as a stand-alone. Walters excels in writing emotional scenes, and her characters are not only realistic, they're people you'd like to befriend. This effective combination makes the reader feel invested in the story and its outcome.

New York City police officer Patrick O'Rourke is recovering from wounds he received in the line of duty. He chooses to convalesce at his sister's house in his hometown of Jamesville.

Shannon Brooker's abusive ex has been let out of prison early, and he's targeting her for revenge. Out of desperation, she hires Patrick to be her bodyguard, despite her deep fears of all men. The attraction between them blossoms into a relationship, but Shannon's ex-husband and Patrick's impending return to New York stand
in the way of their happiness. (SAMHAIN, Mar., 278 pp., $14.50)
