Thomas weaves an intriguing tale, alternating between first- and third-person viewpoints. The hero is wonderful, a man who doesn't have to act macho to get the job done. Quite a delightful story.

Reporter Pepper Malone ends up in Bailee, Texas, after she gets too close to a story in Chicago and nearly loses her life. Pepper takes the job of reporter for the Bailee Bugle, where she works for Michael McCulloch.

Mike has only taken over publishing the family paper because his father and elder brother are both dead. He accepts it as his reality, but his dreams lie elsewhere. It soon becomes apparent that someone else doesn't want Mike running the paper either. Threats are made against it, but Pepper is afraid they might be meant for her. (BERKLEY, Apr., 352 pp., $7.99)
