RIO STAR
by Pepper Smith

Genre: Mystery/Suspense/Thriller, Mystery

RT Rating

Based on historical facts about Argentina’s Dirty War of 1976 -1983, the roots of this story are quite interesting. Unfortunately, the many scenes and conversations of horse training and racing tend to slow the pace a great deal. Also, there is never any real sense that the “bad guys” will ever harm Patty; in fact, there are times when she seems happy about being a part of the scheme.

Patty O’Donnell left Arizona when she married Micheál and ended up on the coast of County Kerry, Ireland, but she didn’t leave behind her love of horses and her excellent skills when it comes to training them. When her husband is away at the races, Patty is kidnapped by con men who want her to help with a racing scam in Argentina. Now Patty has to deal with their plot while finding a way to escape and keep her unborn child safe from harm. (MUNDANIA, Oct., 200 pp., $12.95)
