It’s obvious that Johnson knows her setting, and she does a brilliant job of bringing her fantasy version of New Orleans to life. An enchanting examination of magic and the people who wield it, River Road is a book to be savored. This second novel in the Sentinels of New Orleans series is a page-turner all by itself, but don’t cheat yourself by missing out on Royal Street, its predecessor.

Hurricane Katrina did more than bring irreparable damage to New Orleans; it also weakened the borders between worlds. Wizard sentinel Drusilla Jack and her partner, Alex Warin, are in charge of keeping the peace and the humans blissfully unaware of the preternatural disturbances around them. Wizards are dying, and something from the Beyond is poisoning the water. Is there a link between the contaminated Mississippi and the war between two clans of Cajun merpeople, or is it the work of something else entirely? (TOR, Nov., 336 pp., $24.99)
