Arran MacLawry is in London at his brother Ranulf’s behest, tasked with maintaining the peace between the MacLawry and Campbell clans who have signed their first peace treaty in 400 years. He is not fond of an arranged betrothal and manages to avoid his fiancée by asking a masked lady for a dance. Little does he know, she is Mary Campbell, the granddaughter of their rival chieftain. After a few clandestine meetings, Arran and Mary are planning their future, which brings down Ran’s wrath because he is afraid that such a marriage would cause both clans to break the truce. Can they prove that love conquers all? (ST. MARTIN’S, Aug., 352 pp., $7.99)
