Alden’s each and every well-placed word demonstrates to readers what a superior storyteller of suspense she is. Her latest has a solid plot, a strong battle-tested heroine and tension to the extreme. This is one story that will have readers turning pages well into the night.

Ex-Green Beret Jack Brooks can’t help but keep tabs on Talia Vega, the woman he rescued from a serial killer two years ago, and deep down he knows his attachment is more personal than he cares to admit. Talia is indebted to Jack, but he reminds her of a past that she wants to put behind her for good. His presence also brings up the hidden feelings she still has for him, which further convinces her that she doesn’t need to be around him. But then another madman enters her life and that changes everything. Jack is determined to stay and protect Talia once again, even at the expense of his own life. (FOREVER, Mar., 464 pp., $7.99)
