Runner is the third in McLeod’s Fringe series, but new readers will have no trouble jumping in here. She creates a world shaded with glimpses of William Gibson-like cyberpunk, and manages to keep the surprises coming. Foster is a bad boy with a heart of gold, whom readers are bound to fall in love with, and his tortured will he/won’t he interactions with Jynx will have you holding your breath until the very last page.
Foster “Never Fail” Nash is one of the best bounty hunters out there: a triple-platinum runner. His latest assignment, collecting the creator of a planet-crippling plague, Jynx Brennan, may be the easiest credit he’s ever made. But Jynx doesn’t act like a typical prisoner, and the longer she’s on his ship, the more he starts to wonder: What happens if she’s innocent? No matter how his feelings about her might change, there’s no way out of the contract on her head — is there? (SAMHAIN, Dec., 272 pp., $15.00)
