Josh Ryan is headed home to south Texas to attend his grandfather's funeral after many years away. He hasn't been ready to face some family issues -- particularly that he and his siblings have the ability to practice witchcraft and, even worse, are cursed. At a stop before the final push home, he encounters Clare Chandler and her son, Jimmy, who are being chased by men with guns. Neither Josh nor Clare is prepared for the attraction that springs up between them, especially with all the baggage each has. The Safekeepers trilogy has an interesting witchcraft twist, and the key characters are wonderfully complex. Linda Conrad says her focus here is on what it is to be a woman, but if Safe With a Stranger (4.5) is any indication; the men certainly don't get shortchanged!
