McCarty continues her Hell's Eight series with this solidly plotted tale. There's wonderful chemistry between Sam and Bella, and the witty banter between them makes the story come alive.
Texas Ranger Sam "Wild Card" MacGregor is no stranger to the harsher side of life, but finding a group of travelers slaughtered by bandits isn't easy, even for him. However, dealing with the sole survivor, Isabella Montoya, complicates Sam's life. The fiery beauty is betrothed to a man called Tejala but refuses to honor the contract. Returning Bella to her family's ranch is perilous, with Tejala's minions lurking, waiting to kill Sam and capture her.
To make matters worse, Bella's an innocent -- curious about sexual matters and determined to seduce Sam. Against his better judgment, he gives in to temptation, but he isn't the marrying kind. As for Bella, she's an heiress in need of a husband by her side. But there's a long journey and some hot nights ahead of them! (SPICE, Jul., 432 pp., $13.95)
