SANCTUARY
by Mercedes Lackey

Genre: Fantasy, General Fantasy

RT Rating

In this third book of the Dragon Jousters series, Kiron—formerly known
as the dragon-boy Vetch—finds himself in an unaccustomed position of leadership. Having escaped the Jouster's Compound in Tia on the back of his scarlet dragon, Avatre, he has returned to Alta and visited the newly rediscovered city of Sanctuary, where he has found acceptance.

It is nearly the time of reckoning
for the Magi, who have successfully taken over the leadership of both Tia and Alta by feeding off the power of
the battle-slain and those gifted with psionic powers. Refugees are streaming into Sanctuary, and it is only a matter
of time before the Magi strike at those who would unite against them.

A bit awkward in spots, this book moves so quickly that it's difficult to keep track of the plot. One of Lackey's trademarks is her sympathetic characters, and she doesn't disappoint here. Fans of her work will enjoy this satisfying conclusion to the Dragon Jousters series. (May, 320 pp., $25.95)
