Hearing that deputy sheriff Max Scalise is back in town doesn't prepare teacher Sarah Clay for seeing him. Or for having Max's young son, Eli, in her class. Sarah miscarried Max's child seven years ago -- which he doesn't know -- and he misinterprets Sarah's pain as negative feelings toward Eli. Learning that Max has secrets too doesn't surprise Sarah, or keep her away from him. But they both know he's not a forever kind of guy. Allison Leigh's Sarah and the Sheriff (3) has a solid conflict, and Sarah is instantly sympathetic. But Max takes a while to warm up to, owing to his past -- and present -- behavior.
