Exceptional describes A SCANDALOUS AFFAIR. Donna Hills tremendous skill shines forth as she allows the reader to witness a number of relationships: parent-child, sister-sister, man-woman and girlfriend-girlfriend, and never makes you feel overwhelmed.
Simone and Samantha Montgomery are the daughters of a congresswoman and a well-respected attorney. Simone is seeking political office and Samantha is a community activist. Chad Rushmore was once involved with Simone and is now seeing Samantha. He is intent on bringing legal action against the local police for the growing number of incidences of police brutality on African-American citizens.
Both women learn to deal with their respective pasts that include feelings of abandonment Simone was in foster care most of her life and Samantha grew up without her father.
Superb writing, a riveting plot, real characters and a definite but not preachy stance on a topic that is touchy at best makes this an excellent book. (Dec., 352 pp., $5.99)
