McQuestion’s novel focuses on three strong female characters surrounded by a strong supporting cast. Her lyrical prose is filled with humor, emotion and love. The plotting is impeccable, and the book will keep you riveted.

Staid and predictable math teacher Thomas Plinka is captivated by the young woman wounded in a bar. It’s so out of character for him, he’s amazed when he asks Skyla to be his bride. His mother Audrey is not sure what to think since it’s the first time he’s wanted to move out of her house. The couple is concerned when a new family with five rowdy boys moves in next door, offering no one to play with their young daughter. But Skyla forms a close friendship with new neighbor Roxanne that gives her life new dimension. Skyla’s part-time job irritates her mother-in-law, which sets off events that alter the dynamics among the three women. Then tragedy strikes. (AMAZONENCORE, 2009, 266 pp., $14.95)
