Turmoil springs to life in this story of forbidden love between two separate communities. The traditions in both communities are similar, yet cause division amongst the elders who uphold the strictest of courting rules. Woodsmall is able to show grace and flexibility even when writing the most unyielding of characters in this story of forbidden love.

Annie Martin has a troubled home life and her mother is sending her away to her Old Order Mennonite grandfather. She and Aden Zook sec-retly meet in a grove of cherry trees to begin courting. Aden’s Old Order Amish family disapproves of the relationship, but Aden must follow his heart until Annie makes it clear that she is unwilling to make the necessary sacrifices so their love can grow stronger. Interference from family members on both sides challenges the young couple to seek God’s will. (WATERBROOK, Feb., 208 pp., $14.99)
