Who says small towns don’t have big-city problems? Citizens of Chandler, Ohio, may think they’re safe, but, as Kelly and Samantha know only too well, they’re wrong. Quinn’s suspenseful presentation of a small town hiding a dark secret is marred by the constant perspective shifts, which distract from the story.

Psychologist Kelly Chapman is concerned about a 14-year-old girl who seems to have developed an interest in an older man. Deputy Samantha Jones is dealing with her own emotional fallout after a recent murder-suicide and her belief that a huge drug lab has set up in town. Then a teenager is caught selling drugs and there’s a chemical dump on her former fiancé’s farm. Can the cases be connected? (MIRA, Oct., 400 pp., $7.99)
