Charlotte Bronte, the author
of Jane Eyre, is dismayed when she receives a letter from her publisher claiming she's broken her contract by selling a novel to a rival publisher. To clear up the miscommunication, she travels to London with her sister Anne. Once there, Charlotte witnesses the murder of a mysterious young lady she met on the train, Isabel White. She later meets the murdered woman's brother, Gilbert, a man who both intrigues and frightens her.

Together, they work to unravel the mystery of Isabel's death, which leads to uncovering a harrowing plot against the British. Charlotte and Mr. White travel to vast lands and encounter dangerous villains as they attempt to stop a madman bent on revenge. (OVERLOOK, Mar., 320 pp., $24.95)
