Captain Luke Hickson finds Kate Middleton and her son handcuffed together, prisoners in their store. After the burglary, Kate needs protection until the culprit is caught and Luke is just the man to do it. Kate, who is free from a ten-year marriage with an uncaring husband, thinks love is the furthest thing from her mindbut it just might find her anyway.

Though Kate is very attracted to Luke, as much as she desires him, shes thriving on her newfound independence. Luke is not without his own past heartaches and more importantly, he doesnt want to become involved with someone under his protection.

With his controlling nature and critical tongue, Luke was a little hard to like as far as heroes go. Also, some plot inconsistencies are distracting (for example, Luke, at six-foot-four needs a step ladder to reach something off a shelf in his closet). On the whole, though, SECRET DESIRE is still an enjoyable read. (Nov., 336 pp., $5.99)
