Book Review

SECRETS AND SHADOWS
by Shannon Delany

Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal

RT Rating

This is a forgettable second effort in Delany’s 13 to Life series. The premise centers on werewolves, who are creatures of science rather than legend, which is a creative twist. But this is nonetheless sadly unoriginal, relying heavily on the usual irritating theme of the helpless female and her growling protector. Though the dialogue is occasionally amusing, it more often consists of canned innuendo.

Jessie Gillmansen is trying her best to adjust to a new version of normal. She and Pietr Ruskova are tentatively together, but Jessie has more on her mind than boys. She’s struggling to negotiate between the Ruskova wolf pack and the CIA, and werewolves aren’t exactly known for their patience. But when Pietr starts acting cold, Jessie wonders if she should give her former crush, the popular and cute Derek, a shot and they find that the CIA is more dangerous than they realized. (ST.
