The world of gladiators is a fascinating one in which to set an erotic romance, especially with the sheer carnality of the culture, but this one drags a bit. The sex scenes are numerous and hot, but they often take the place of plot, and Lilia and her fellow gladiator lover exchange little more than a handful of words. The climactic scene feels too much like The Hunger Games goes Roman, and characters who seem important initially fall by the wayside, never to be heard from again.

Lilia is a slave, but she’s a rarity among slaves: She’s a female gladiator. Long used to defending herself in the gladiator quarters as well as in the arena, her life is turned upside down when her master acquires a new gladiator, Christus. Soon she and Christus are drawn into a competition at the command of the emperor’s brother with political motivations and, in the end, they may have to sacrifice each other.
