Maxwell’s novel is wonderful, with two characters who are both strong-willed but tempered by the real affection between them. Though the plot is an old one, Maxwell has infused it with a new freshness and updated the characters to suit. Readers will love this start to her series and will anxiously await the next installment.

Lucie Miller is a Plain Jane, and she knows it, but the final blow to her ego comes when the doctor she has been in love with for years asks for her best friend’s number. Then, she is reunited with her first crush, MMA star Reid Andrews. Still reeling from an injury that could keep him from reclaiming his champion title, Reid never expects to see Lucie. After prying her problem out of her he offers a deal: She will get him ready to fight again, and he will teach her to seduce the doctor of her dreams. Neither counts on the attraction that simmers between them, or the love that slowly evolves from it. But when Reid lets the ghosts of his past come between them, he will need to decide if he loves Lucie enough to overcome them. (ENTANGLEDPUBLISHING.COM, dl $2.99)
