There isn’t enough romantic tension or action in this debut, but the descriptions are intriguing. The main romance is so heavily foreshadowed that the actual playing out of their attraction is flat and predictable. Hopcus leans on stereotypes for characterization — a Southern belle who likes to drink, an Asian computer geek. Not many of the questions are answered in this obvious book one, but one hopes Hopcus will fill us in with book two.

After her sister dies mysteriously, Phe begins to have intense dreams. She decides to attend Devenish Prep School in Shadow Hills, Mass., mostly because her sister’s final diary entry mentions the school. A mystery surrounds the small town and she meets some weird locals, a gang of possible new friends and most importantly, Zach, a hunky guy who’s literally electric — and who is in her dreams.
