Swain’s second Peter Warlock story is a medley of fantasy and mystery/thriller; fluid narrative and effortless dialogue add to the plot and the characters are well developed.

Publicly Peter is a NYC magician; privately he and a group of psychic friends aid the FBI by helping solve and prevent atrocious crimes. Their latest séance reveals a serial killer and brings forth evil spirits, known as shadow people, whose message seems sinister and destructive. There’s only a short window of time to save the next victim. (TOR, Jun., 352 pp., $25.99)
