McKenzie Lewis is unusual among humans in that she can see the fae and read the shadow tracks they leave behind. When she was 16 she was kidnapped and abused by a renegade fae who wanted to overthrow the king. Rescued by the king’s sword master Kyol, McKenzie has spent the last 10 years assisting Kyol as he tracks down rebels for the king. Then McKenzie is captured by the dangerously attractive rebel leader, Aren. Confusingly, Aren doesn’t kill her, but rather teaches her the forbidden fae language and challenges her perceptions of the war. With the war starting to spill over into the human world, McKenzie is going to have to decide whose “truth” she can trust. (ACE, Nov., 320 pp., $7.99)
