Trouble seems to be Stormwalker Janet Begay’s middle name as the third chapter of this intense series opens with a bang. The world that James has created is filled with myth and magic that collides with everyday life … with spectacular results. At the heart of this riveting series is a young woman determined to gain control of her powers to protect those she loves; not an easy task when dark magic is afoot. This series is definitely improving with age!

Speeding down the highway with Sheriff Nash Jones hot on her tail, Janet and Nash are nearly killed when a massive sinkhole opens up beneath them. This is no ordinary geological event. Ghostly fingers reach out of the rocks to try and grab them. They are rescued by Janet’s dragon-shifter lover Mick, but Janet is afraid something dark is stirring. Janet’s Crossroads Hotel is under attack when a building inspector threatens to shut her down. Shortly thereafter, to Janet’s horror, she learns that a dark witch has enslaved Mick. To save her lover, her friends and her hotel, Janet is going to have to fight against a dreaded Shadow Walker. (BERKLEY SENSATION, Jun., 304 pp., $7.99)
