It is always a bit sad when a terrific series comes to a close, but you can’t help but rejoice when it goes out with a bang! With this amazing series, Murphy created both a heroine and secondary characters who grew and evolved dramatically. The final chapter in the mind-bending Walker Papers pits former reluctant shaman Joanne Walker against her legendary enemy, the Master. There is also a neat symmetry as the final epic battle returns to Seattle where Joanne was forced to face her destiny. Kudos and thank you!

Joanne is in shock when she receives a phone call from her cab-driving friend Gary Muldoon saying that his wife Annie is in the hospital. This is extremely disturbing for many reasons, not the least of which is that Annie died years before Joanne ever met Gary. The Master, through the Raven Mocker, is on the move so Joanne and Capt. Michael Morrison race back to Seattle to stop him. When Gary rode with the god of the Wild Hunt, Cernunnos, he caught the Master’s eye, so now the Master is trying to gain a foothold through a resurrected Annie. To save those she loves as well as the world, it will require that Joanne draw on all of her Shamanic abilities … but will it be enough? (MIRA, Jul., 400 pp., $14.95)
