The second book in Pettrey’s Alaskan Courage series is action packed from the first page. Although the plot is intriguing and definitely gets better as the book goes on, the character of Piper is fairly unrealistic with her ability to crowd into a police investigation and her other antics. The romance and the twists and turns of the story make up for many of its shortcomings in the end.
When Piper McKenna’s brother Reef is discovered near a dead body with the murder weapon in his hand, the police think they have an open-and-shut case. Reef claims he didn’t do it, and his sister believes him. Deputy Landon Grainger vows to investigate thoroughly. Piper isn’t sure about that, so she decides to snoop around on her own. As Landon and Piper join forces, they find that the victim and circumstances are definitely not what they first seemed to be. (BETHANY HOUSE, Feb., 320 pp., $14.99)
