Burton delivers another page-turner that will keep readers up well past midnight. Strong, relatable characters like Charlotte don’t come around very often, and now she has a story all her own. Her mystery will keep readers guessing until the end with its even pacing and suspenseful plot.

A serial killer has appointed himself judge, jury and executioner of the “witches” who tempt and corrupt with their evil. He holds them underwater to purify them of their sins and stakes them to the ground, marking them so all will know what they were. Charlotte Wellington seems like an ice-cold, composed, professional defense attorney, but she has a past no one would ever suspect. As the killer takes victim after victim, Charlotte’s former life is exposed, putting her in mortal danger. (ZEBRA, Jan., 416 pp., $7.99)
