Melanie Zeitgar is a girl with a problem: She's an uncontrollable kleptomaniac. Through failed auditions, doomed love affairs and Internet humiliations engineered by her temp agency nemesis, the one constant in Melanie's life is her gift for stealing the right item at the right time. When she meets the perfect man -- who could put her in jail -- Melanie must face up to her problems or risk losing the best thing that has ever happened to her.

Melanie is not a likeable heroine, and therein lies the major problem with this book. Although Carter makes an attempt late in the book to explain Melanie's behavior, by that time it's too late for the reader to empathize with her. The presence of her attractive and intriguing love interest, and the chemistry between, are the two best parts of the book. (Mar., 304 pp., $12.95)
