Image of A Shining Light (Home to Amana)

This gripping historical about a second chance at love gives readers a glimpse at what life was like in an 1890s Amana community: simple, but with strict rules. Miller has crafted a wonderful, well-researched series about the Amana villages, giving this group of people the respect they deserve.

Andrea Wilson should feel devastated when she finds out that her husband has been declared dead, but she feels relief instead. She and her young son, Lukas, return to her family farm in Iowa, only to learn that her father died in the fire that destroyed the farm, and the nearby Amana village bought everything. With no place to start anew, the village elders offer her a safe haven. Andrea feels at home with these kind souls, especially with tinsmith Dirk Knefler, who has given Lukas a positive male influence. When Andrea’s past comes to town, her dream of a fresh start with Dirk hangs by a thread. (BETHANY HOUSE, Mar., 352 pp., $14.99)
