This prequel takes readers back in time to Nina Reilly's law school days. Being able to see where many of the characters got their passion and motivation from makes the whole series more interesting. It also offers a starting place for new readers, who will surely be sucked into this intriguing thriller with wonderful character development. It adds a new level of understanding and interest, since it's fun to see how far all the characters have come over the course of this series.

As a paralegal studying to become an attorney, Nina is in her own legal battle when her son's father comes back into the picture and fights her for custody. At work, Nina is faced with a case that's been classified as an accident, yet she's sure something more sinister is involved with the woman who "fell" off a bridge near Big Sur. All aspects of Nina's life are heating up, and if she isn't careful, she could get burned. (POCKET, Dec., 368 pp., $25.00)
