SHOWDOWN IN WEST TEXAS (3) by Amanda Stevens: Down-on-his luck salesman Cage Nichols is running from a gangland shooting when his car breaks down. A stranger picks him up, falls ill and then dies when Cage takes him to the ER. When Cage learns he's a suspect in the shootings, he assumes the dead man's identity -- only to discover the dead man is a hit man and his target is Sheriff Grace Steel. Grace has her own problems -- an alienated sister, a nasty ex-husband and his bimbo girlfriend, and now she has to break in a new deputy -- Cage. Then things get even more confusing. Stevens' characters are interesting and believable, and the dialogue is colorful and entertaining, but this story is hampered by the ludicrous coincidences that lead the protagonists to each other.
