Image of Sierra Bride (Western #956)

This fast, light read has a predictable plot, but Kernan develops her characters well. Both the heroine and hero have baggage, but the love that develops between them makes them stronger.

When Elijah Samuel Pickett is attacked in an alley, an angel comes to his rescue. When Sam finds his rescuer, Kate, and discovers that she is a widow, he asks her to be his mistress.

At first Kate refuses, but when her mortgage comes due, she accepts. Sam enlists her aid in drumming up supporters for a railroad through the mountains, and they begin to build trust. But someone is trying to kill Sam. When Kate is nearly killed, he realizes he cannot live without her. They must prevent any more innocents from being hurt and preserve their own fragile love.
