At the crux of each novella in this collection lies headstrong heroines, each of whom receives a letter that affects the course of her life. Set within a historical context, each novella is filled with adventure, romance and spiritual wisdom. The author’s note at the end of each story describing the historical context is a nice touch.

In Eakes’ “Moonlight Promise,” a letter from a childhood friend leads Camilla Renfrew onto a steamboat and into love. Merrie Bentley gets a letter from a magazine editor in Shorey’s “Lessons in Love” and hatches a scheme to pursue a writing career. In Cabot’s “One Little Word,” a letter from her brother prompts Lorraine Caldwell to meet with a carousel maker who challenges and captivates her heart. Grace Hathaway acts quickly in Kirkpatrick’s “A Saving Grace” after she receives a letter about her dear friend who is wasting away in a sanitorium. (REVELL, Apr., 384 pp., $14.99)
