Image of Sixth Grave on the Edge (Charley Davidson)

Every time P.I./Grim Reaper Charley Davidson thinks she is getting a handle on her job, or her destiny, she is quickly disabused of that notion. Übertalented Jones keeps stirring the pot and throwing in crazy new developments, guaranteed to keep her characters and readers zanily off balance.

Now that Satan’s son Reyes Farrow has asked Charley to marry him (via sticky note), Charley has decided she wants to help Reyes by tracking down more info about his human birth family. Reyes is adamantly against her meddling, but when has that ever stopped Charley? Charley’s attention is diverted when she is threatened by thugs who want her to find a certain woman, or someone she loves will be kidnapped. Charley is also approached by a desperate man who lost his soul in a card game, which leads her to a man called the Dealer who is much more than he appears — and who has a grudge against Reyes. All in all, a typical week for Charley. (ST. MARTIN’S, May, 352 pp., $25.99)
