SLASHBACK
by Rob Thurman

Genre: Paranormal/Urban Fantasy, Urban Fantasy

The past comes back with a deadly vengeance in the newest Cal Leandros tale. In this novel, the focus is split between the present and events from 12 years ago, filtered through both Cal’s and Niko’s perspectives. Thurman does her usual stellar job of combining wisecracks and violence, but the relationship between Cal and Niko remains the heart of the series.

A serial killer has come to town, leaving viciously skinned victims in his wake. Cal and Niko learn it is the legendary Spring-heeled Jack, who is gathering acolytes as well as quarry. Unfortunately it seems Jack has a major bone to pick with the Leandros brothers. Before Niko and Cal became battle-hardened warriors, they were young teens struggling to survive and, over a decade ago, they nearly fell victim to a killer living next door. Jack remembers the brothers’ run-in with one of his apprentices, and now he wants payback. (ROC, Mar., 352 pp., $7.99)
