Charlotte Burns is suspicious of reporter Dylan Smith when he comes to town asking questions about Gus Macauley, a man who's been a surrogate father to her for years. Although Dylan says he's writing a book about a nearby orchard, Charlotte thinks there's more to his story. She soon finds out that Dylan is there for personal reasons: He's looking for his father. His search doesn't stop the attraction between them from building. In Small-Town Family (3), Margaret Watson nicely depicts the growing relationship between Charlotte and Dylan. Charlotte's mistrust
is something with which many readers
will be able to identify.
