Reporter Nell Matthews and her fianci, police officer Mike Svenson, are helping prepare a local womens shelter for its opening. When a man forcefully enters and grabs project coordinator Patsy Raymond, Mike draws
a gun and shouts a warning, but it is to no avail. The man wont release Patsy, so Mike shoots and kills him.

Then it is revealed that the dead man is the scion of one of the towns wealthiest families and that his wife, Cherilyn, a former beauty queen and television reporter, has been staying at the shelter. Naturally an investigation is launched.

Nells reporter instincts are aroused by the events. When Cherilyn is murdered, Nell realizes that nothing is what it seems and she is going to have to get to the bottom of things and quickly.

The amazing plot twists, believable storyline, and fascinating characters make THE SMOKING GUN an almost too-hot-to-handle read. Nell Matthews is plucky, determined and loyal and will win the hearts of all readers. (Mar., 240 pp., $5.99)
