It has been a difficult year for Meg Williams. Her husband died in a tragic car accident. Though her mother has moved in to help Meg, but Vivian Cledes biting comments and complete lack of love and warmth only add to the stressful household. Everything comes to a head when Megs teenage daughter Allie runs away from home and Megs carefully held together world begins to crumble.
Sheriff Earl Sanders had been the best friend of Megs husband. Hes spent this difficult time trying to help Meg and her family in any way he could. What he couldnt help was falling for Meg himself. After Allie runs away, however, secrets, fears and many jumbled emotions come to light, and Earls not sure hes prepared to deal with any of it.
This well crafted character study examines a short period of time in the lives of several very different people and though some portions of the story seem glossed over, it provides an enjoyable read. (Apr., 384 pp., $5.99)
