THE SOLDIER AND THE ROSE
As Rose Shapiro and her second husband, Charlie, prepare to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary, Rose reflects on their life together, and the years prior to it. Their granddaughter, Liz, is expecting, and her husband, Matt, is being deployed to Iraq -- echoing Rose's experience with her first husband, Joe. Killed in Europe during World War II, Joe was a friend and comrade of Charlie's, and is also the reason Charlie met Rose when he returned to the States. Linda Barrett's The Soldier and the Rose (4) has a lot of well-drawn characters and a very believable conflict.
