A series of grisly, mysterious deaths in an exclusive island community causes physician Declan Quinn to believe he may have an outbreak of an unknown disease on his hands.

But soon he wonders if there's something more sinister at work, perhaps an evil presence that the dogs on the island—particularly the wolf/husky hybrid owned by veterinarian Markie Cross—can detect but not completely protect humans from. Joining forces with the vet, Dec works to solve the riddle before it's too late for the islanders, especially Markie.

SOMETHING DEADLY is atmospheric and intense, and the author's use of the canine perspective is quite interesting. (Jan., 384 pp., $6.50)
