Book Review

SOMETHING STRANGE AND DEADLY
by Susan Dennard

Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal, Historical

RT Rating

It’s not simple to create a novel with a convincing blend of 19th-century Philadelphia society and zombies. Yet Dennard manages the task with aplomb, though she could have added more emotion and depth to the tale. Realistic characters, compelling action sequences and an entertaining, twisty plot will delight.

Eleanor Fitt’s father is dead, her family in financial ruin and her mother content to marry her off. And now her brother’s missing, perhaps due to the zombies terrorizing Philadelphia under the orchestration of an unknown necromancer. Eleanor must ask the Spirit Hunters for help. Soon, she’s fighting for her life — and perhaps the lives of everyone in Philadelphia. (HARPERTEEN, Aug., 400 pp., $17.99, HC, ISBN: 9780062083265, 13 & Up)
