Questions are answered and battles are fought in the fifth installment of the Jolie Wilkins series. Jolie is coming into her own as Queen of the Underworld, and it makes for a more exciting, involving story. Mallory has developed her character a little more with every book, and now Jolie really shines. The building of different worlds and the addition of time travel have added to the chaos and complexity of the series, making for an extraordinary read.

Jolie Wilkins is more than the mere fortuneteller she thought she was. She is Queen of the Underworld, and has more magic than she knew possible. Her kingdom is threatened by the Lurkers, a powerful breed of half-humans determined to overthrow the Underworld. But Jolie’s not about to let that happen. She’s finally together with her soul mate, Rand, who is everything she’s ever dreamed of: honorable, devastatingly handsome and completely devoted to her. Why she can’t seem to get dangerous vampire and protector Sinjin out of her head and heart is a mystery — one that’s driving her crazy. Getting her priorities in order and winning a battle is just the beginning for this royal witch. (BANTAM, Oct., 336 pp, $7.99)
