Book editor Cassie Hayes has a lot on her plate, including a father with Alzheimer's disease, a gold-digging mother, coffee and tequila addictions, and an ongoing phone-sex relationship with author Michael Pearton—they've never actually met, but he looks sexy in his book-jacket photo.

Her life is turned upside-down when she has to move in with reclusive author Roland Riggs to obtain and edit a long-awaited sequel to his Pulitzer Prizewinning novel. Cassie is annoyed, Michael is jealous, Roland is distracted by his unrequited love for his Spanish housekeeper, and a tabloid reporter has a scoop that could make things very messy.

This fast-paced and funny novel has a great premise and some interesting twists, but some of the subplots fall flat. (Jan., 256 pp., $12.95)
