With an original plot and endearing characters, Gray’s latest has a lot of good. Yet some aspects, like the repetitive spellcasting, illogical character actions and unexplained backstory, make for head-shaking moments. The overall enjoyable Spellcaster leaves the door wide open for a sequel.

Needing a fresh start after her mother leaves, Nadia’s family moves to Captive’s Sound. The quaint East Coast town is plagued by unexplained accidents and death. Nadia is determined to discover what evil is infecting Captive’s Sound. Mateo knows he’s going insane. His visions mark the beginning of the cycle that destroyed many of his ancestors — including his mother. Nadia and Mateo must work together. If they fail, all will be destroyed.
