SPELLS AND STITCHES
Sorceress, cop and baby make three in this fun and bewitching tale that’s got a stable full of delightfully paranormal characters and a whole passel of humans to boot. Bretton gives us a story of family dynamics and dysfunction and a romance that’s improbable but perfect. The series is best read in order.
Welcome to Sugar Maple, Vt.! Well, make that welcome only if you’re from an otherwordly species. Humans are only welcome for short visits, except for police chief Luke MacKensie, a human in love with resident sorceress Chloe Hobbs. They’re about to become parents, which should be a joyous occasion but there is pain from both their pasts that’s interfering. Luke’s family has found out about the pregnancy and the MacKensie crew is on their way en masse for a visit, which spells disaster for a town full of magical secrets. As if that’s not enough, Luke and Chloe know their daughter has a destiny to fulfill. (BERKLEY, Dec., 336 pp., $15.00)
