When it comes to work, Estep's newest heroine is brutally efficient and very pragmatic, which gives the new Elemental Assassin series plenty of bite. Shades of gray rule in this world where magic and murder are all too commonplace. The gritty tone of this series gives Estep a chance to walk on the darker side. Kudos to her for the
knife-edged suspense!

Known as the Spider, Gin has a reputation as one of the best assassins around. Although a stone elemental, she doesn't rely on her magic, but rather her wits and talent with knives. Her new assignment seems straightforward: Someone wants businessman Gordon Giles dead for a supposed embezzlement. But nothing about this contract is typical. When Gin is double-crossed and Fletcher, her handler/father figure, is brutally murdered, Gin is out for blood.

A deadly air elemental has killed Fletcher, framed Gin for murder and nearly killed Fletcher's son Finn; the question is why? To find out, Gin is going to have to work with a sexy detective who has his own reasons for wanting her dead. (POCKET, Feb., 384 pp., $7.99)
