Book Review

THE SPIRIT THIEF
by Rachel Aaron

Genre: Fantasy, General Fantasy

RT Rating

A charming and fast-paced caper with intriguing worldbuilding and interesting characters. Eli and Miranda have palpable chemistry. The supporting characters are complex, complete with their own motivations, which is always a bonus, and the villain of the piece is delightfully nasty.

Eli Monpress is the most successful wizard-thief of his era and he feels that as such, it’s necessary to have the largest bounty — nothing less than one million gold standards will do. Accompanied by a swordsman and a demonseed, he puts his plan into motion: kidnap the king of Mellinor, a country with a legendary hatred of magic. Miranda Lyonette is a more traditional wizard and member of the Spirit Court, a kind of magical police force, and she’s hot on Eli’s trail, hoping to capture him — but when the situation becomes more complicated, she allies herself with the charming thief.
