Inventive and charmingly funny, DeLake’s second Assassins Guild adventure focuses on an endearing love story in the midst of an intergalactic exploit. More time could have been spent setting up the futuristic world of the story and giving specific details about the characters for readers unfamiliar with the world of the book. However, the emotional connection between the main characters is so heartfelt, and the witty repartee so engaging, that it’s easy to get wrapped up in their story.

All Skye Jones wants is a hamburger from her favorite greasy spoon diner on the Krell space station. What she finds instead is Jack Hunter, the tallest and most challenging man she has ever met. Her assassin’s training has taught her not to trust anyone, but Skye can’t resist Jack’s charm. A double agent, Jack knows better than to ever trust a stranger, but the sizzling chemistry he feels with the mysterious Skye is too tempting to ignore. When Jack and Skye are targeted by two superior assassins, they realize that putting their faith in one another might be the only way to stay alive. (SOURCEBOOKS, Jul., 320 pp., $6.99)
