STILL MISSING

RT Rating

Carefully and claustrophobically, Stevens crafts a double narrative of a woman’s abduction and escape, and her attempts to recover and reclaim herself after the brutal ordeal. There’s a plot twist near the end that some may see coming, but it does not detract from the taut, chilling tale. With a gutsy but very human heroine, this book will abduct your reading time late into the night.

Former real-estate agent Annie O’Sullivan recalls her yearlong captivity in sessions with a psychiatrist. She was abducted from an open house and secreted away to a remote and impenetrable cabin by a psychotic man she dubbed The Freak. With the help of her therapist — and a detective on the case — Annie struggles to put her life together again. (ST. MARTIN’S, Jul., 352 pp., $24.99)
